IaaS- Infrastructure as a Service - delivers IT infrastructure such as servers, switches, firewalls and other hardware components on a virtualised basis typically on a virtualisation platform.
SaaS - Software as a Service- delivers an Internet or cloud based software application where the software resides on the Internet with no need to install locally.
PaaS - Platform as a Service - delivers the infrastructure and part of the application stack as a service and enables the user to build a software application and deliver it in the cloud, typically used for application development.
Self Provisioning - ability of customer to design, build and buy IT services without a service providers intervention.Systems with a high degree of self management.
Virtual Server - using virtualisation software (a hypervisor) a physical server can be split into multiple servers which are independent of the underlying hardware, also known as a Virtual Private Server.
Hypervisor - software which makes it possible to run multiple Operating Systems concurrently on a single physical host.
Cloud Platform - an IT services platform which is hosted on the Internet.
Virtualisation Platform - IT infrastructure where the hardware has been 'virtualised' by a hypervisor.
Grid Computing - a group of computing resourses workingtogether to complete a task.
Utility Computing - the packaging of computer resourses such as servers and storage where the service is metered on a pay as you use basis.
Private Cloud - also called a corporate or internal cloud, provides hosted computing services to a limited or specific group of users.
Public Cloud - sometimes called an external cloud where the resources are available over the public internet to the general public.
Hybrid Cloud - where a mix of multiple private and public cloud services are used to achieve overall IT strategy.
